Hogan's Posture and your game!

Ben Hogan had a distinct and powerful looking posture that often featured his legs set further apart than most golf instruction advocates.

Would this work for the average golfer and what might be the advantages, disadvantages?

Hogan was in an auto accident in the late 40's that crushed his legs and hip. I bet he set them farther apart after that to steady his swing and let him use his upper body and torso more than using a leg drive.

Close together, far apart, I don't think it makes that much difference. Look at the pros, man. All those guy have a different look. If youre short like Hogan or Fred Funk you probably don't want to be close together or you'll fall over. I think you are trying to make something out of nothing.

I disagree. I have been teaching golf now for 10 years and how your feet are placed is a big deal. If you have them too far apart you restrict your hip turn. If you get them too close, you'll not be able to shift your weight.A good instructor will help you find the best balance point, which is different for all golfers.

Hogan is pretty unique, I don't see a lot of tour guys his size using such a wide stance. Look at Fred Funk, Tom Kite, Watson, Jeff Sluman, these are small men who keep their stance pretty close together for full shots. I think wide feet restrict hip turn.. Hogan's right foot was toed a bit in. Maybe he didn't want to get too far to the right?
